Fall Field Day and Annual Meeting 2011
The Florida Angus Association Field Day at Cone's Cattle Ranch was a great success. We want to thank everyone who participated and thank the Cone Family and the Grayber Family for hosting the event and all the board members, members, and volunteers that made the day possible.
The day started off with our Annual Meeting and Election of new officers.
Events Highlights from the year were the Spring Field Day at Dr. and Mrs. Freel's Country Oaks Angus and Spring Junior Show, the Fall Junior Show, the Florida State Fair Junior Show, and the Fall Field Day and Annual Meeting. Framed Prints from the American Angus Collection were presented as gifts to The Cone Family and the Grayber Family for Hosting the Fall event, and the Freel Family for hosting the Spring Event.
Field Day Program
The program for the day was given by Dr. Tonya Amen from Pfizer Animal Health and Dr. Roger West.
Dr. West and Dr. Amen talked about the Genomic Enhanced EPD Testing; Dr. Amen expertly explained the testing and the advantages of the test for our industry and the individual cattle producer. About Our Speakers
Dr. Roger West has a PhD from Texas A&M in Meat Science and taught at the University of Florida for 30 years.
He is a certified ultrasound technician and is currently serving as the Secretary/Treasurer of the National Cattlemen's Beef Board as well as a board member of the Florida Angus Association. Additionally he runs 400 head of momma cows in Alachua County.
Dr. Tonya Amen is currently serving as the Resolutions Committee Representative for NCBA's Young Producers Council. Tonya has worked as a Cattle Genetics Specialist for Pfizer Animal Genetics since June of 2010. She was raised in Northeast Colorado and received her B.S. degree in Animal Science from Texas Tech University and her M.S. and Ph.D in Animal Breeding from Texas A&M University. Prior to Pfizer, Tonya spent 3 years as Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls.
Florida Angus Association Female Sale
Ronnie Gilmore our Florida Angus Female Sale Chairman gave us a report on the upcoming sale scheduled April 28th in Marianna Florida at the University of Florida Bull Test Facility. Members already received consignment enrollment forms for the sale. It promises to be a great event. Lunch was delicious CAB Angus Hamburgers by Buckhead Beef and all the "fixins" to go with them. The Silent Auction had very nice items and was a big success.
The Quiz Bowl was a highlight of the day, the Adults vs. the Juniors was fun and very informative for all. See the photos attached for the team members and more of the event.
We are looking forward to a great year for 2012 with the Female Sale, Junior Shows and a Spring and Fall Field Day. We will be planning some other events as well. We hope you all will join us in our upcoming events.
